12 Ways to control Costs in Your company

Incurring expenses is usually the focus of many business owners. Ordinarily because it's the easiest and most illustrated thing to look at. However, there are other considerations for controlling costs. The first one is to look at how you conduct the flow of money overall. By this I mean your budgets.

I want to reiterate that if you spend the time upfront defining your budgets, then it's a lot easier to conduct the costs that are incurred down the track. It also allows you to then delegate the management of this process to the bookkeeper or financial controller.

1) Top Tip: Implement A principles That You Only Pay On buy Orders
One of the most effective ways to operate costs is once you have your allocation defined, is to then implement a principles where you Only pay invoices on buy orders. This will stop employees ordering willy nilly in its tracks. Because as soon as you issue the edict to staff, you make sure that the accounts citizen Only pay where a buy order is quoted.

For staff to spend money, this means that they have to invite a buy order from the accounts person. They would then check the allocation to make sure that the number is allocated, and that the man ordering the goods is authorized to make the order. If the riposte is yes to both of these, then the accounts man would issue a buy order which the man ordering the goods when then quote.

So when the invoice is received by the accounts person, they would then check that the goods have been delivered and that there is no superior issues to resolve. They would then prepare a cheque or online transaction for payment.

If there is no buy order assigned, then they would refer it back to the provider and/or the staff member who ordered the goods to resolve. I recommend being tough here - if its not assigned, then you don't pay. It's then up to the worker to determine the catalogue - well essentially you probably would, but when there's a perceived consequence, it usually puts the fear of god into them! They usually don't spend your money again after that scare!

2) Value For Money
One of the areas that most business owners are usually fairly comfortable with is controlling costs. But let's just go over the basics again. As a business owner, you should set a key doing indicator for your financial controller to be responsible for value for money. This means continually finding for separate and innovative ways to operate costs as a way of impacting your business' profitability. A dollar saved as a cost, goes directly to lowest line profitability. Some businesses find that by implementing tight cost controls and questioning the need for all spending has achieved the same profitability correction that would otherwise have had to come from a huge growth in sales.

Now I'm about to briefly go through a checklist that is available in the 'Essential Financial management Templates' workbook which you can buy from our website.

3) Shop nearby For Deals
The first rule of thumb is to shop around. No matter who I'm dealing with, whether it's a good friend or colleague that's providing the service, I always compare it against two other quotes. Now, I usually don't go level for the cheapest option, but it does allow me to then go back to the traditional man and have an open and honest seminar about reducing the traditional cost. I always think about a comment one Nasa astronaut once made when being asked about his feelings about being in space on a new space shuttle for the first time. His reply was, "how would you feel if you were about to fly in craft millions of mils into space, where your shuttle safety is wholly reliant on our governments procedure of sourcing the cheapest part possible." Point well taken. It's not always about going for the cheapest option, but it is about ensuring that you're getting value for money.

4) compare Actual Costs To Your Budgeted Costs
Another point is to always present costs on an ongoing basis. I would recommend monthly - lets not wait until the end of the year or when we're in strife, we should always be focused on ensuring that we're getting value for money at all times. When you are going through your reports with your financial controller, use this as a time to look over your costs and compare them to your budgets.

5) Think outside The Box To reconsider Other Options
Also be sure that you're aware of what's happening in the shop place. Is there a new player who can supply contentious prices, or is there an online option available to you. Possibly even a global possibility for you to explore. I'll give you the example of a website. I had a friend who rung me to ask my concept about a quote she had received on building a website. The quote was for ,000. I referred her to a website called elance.com that has a global online bidding community. She located a project brief for man to build her a website and ended up getting one built for 00. She was delighted with the potential and the end succeed - the only thing she did say was that she had to spend more time communicating with them (as they were overseas) but she was happy to do that to save herself ,600!

6) Continually present Your standard Providers For The Best Prices
Are there areas in your price items that are being deregulated or additional players coming into the market. For example, electricity or gas providers, telephone providers, etc. You may be able to save money by consolidating accounts on your mobile phone bills. There are also telco providers that admittedly supply a free estimate service to see where they can save costs for you - use them!

7) present Electricity Costs With An energy Audit
And while we're on electricity costs, have you conducted an energy audit in your business to ensure that you're not needlessly wasting money? For example, some energy reduction strategies could contain turning off lights in offices that are not being used, or turning off the air condi8tioning system, photocopiers, printers and computers at the end of the day. Is there the possible to use electricity in "off peak" periods. Put timers on plant and tool and put signs nearby your business reminding citizen to turnoff the lights and to save energy.

8) Reign In The stationery Bills!
One of the biggest price items in a business can be stationery. A lot of business owners won't pay a delivery payment to their business, but they will send an office man to pick up the stationery, at -30 an hour, plus allow them to buy "whatever they need". Have you ever tried not to buy an impulse item at a stationery store? It's impossible - take it from man who knows! Look also at the purchases that are being made in small quantities - can money be saved by purchasing in bulk - especially in printing. Make sure that one man only has the accountability of purchasing stationery and ordering printing so that its not open slather of everyone in the business and they can also make sure that the items are admittedly required.

9) produce A tour Policy
Do you have a tour procedure in your business? If so, it should clearly frame the class of air travel, grade of hotel accommodation and what expenses can be incurred and reimbursed. There are numerous accommodation site available now days that allow last tiny bookings at a greatly reduced cost - have a look at wotif.com to see what I mean. Using this site means that you can admittedly book staff into 5 star accommodation at 3 star prices.

10) Check Bank Charges & Fees
Also reconsider bank interest, fees and charges - these should be checked usually as banks often make mistakes in charging fees and interest. You should also enounce a article to interest rates and margins quoted by banks and shop nearby for the best interest rates.

11) present car Allowances
Vehicle allowances are also an additional one area of costs that can rack up pretty fast when employees cotton to the fact that they can receive a nice tiny earner using the Ato car reduction figures. If you have citizen using their vehicles a lot, you may want to reconsider whether you buy or hire a pool car. Often the number of money that you can spend paying car allowances can admittedly pay off a business car - therefore building your assets at the same time. an additional one way to hand this is to offer to pay for all petrol costs instead. So all an worker fills up, they just need to hand you the receipt and they'll be reimbursed in full. This still adds up cheaper than paying a car reduction - and is easier to allocation for in your behalf and loss projections.

Another way to additional streamline this process can be to have fuel cards that link into a particular catalogue that you pay each month.

12) produce Boundaries For worker price Reimbursements
Always produce the boundaries for price reimbursements in your business. Concentrate this into your induction agenda in your business so that everyone is highly clear of the expectations. This is particularly relevant if you have a business improvement man who wants to have an "entertaining" budget. I usually empower citizen in this regard by providing them with a profitability target on sales made - which incorporates things like their entertainment budget. But more often, I'll act6ually sit with them and run through ways to supply possible clients with value, without expenses "wining and dining" experiences. In fact, in my It days, where everyone apart from me had a corporate reputation card for "smoozing". I was more effective with my sales because I would take citizen for a coffee.

13) Make Sure The Invoices You Pay Are Correct
Advertising is an additional one area where businesses can incur lots of charges. I've covered off on advertising in an additional one Cd in the Jump Start Your business Series, but one thing I want to mention here is taking care with "bogus" invoices for advertising and checking that all invoices are admittedly for valid advertising. Now if you have a buy order principles or a centralized purchasing process, then you won't get caught out on this one. But a few years back there was a scam where citizen were receiving invoices for "advertising" and then pressuring the accounts payable staff to pay them. A nice tiny earner made from the lack of internal systems in 99% of companies.

14) Beware Of Overcharging!
I want to cease by talking about overcharging and the need to always check invoices against contracts or agreements. This includes rental agreements, any provider invoices, etc. If in doubt, don't be shy of request the provider to supply more details or query any inconsistencies. Errors are admittedly made and usually suppliers are highly apologetic should a incompatibility be discovered.

15) Ensure That Your Petty Cash Has A Monthly Limit
Despite your best planning, there will be cases when you need to have entrance to some petty cash - that is small amounts of cash for purchases that are fairly minor and random.

Make sure that the introductory petty cash number is realistic - if it keeps exceeding the number each month, you need to produce where the cash is being spent and then put alternative strategies in place. However, I would strongly recommend setting a monthly limit that staff are aware of - for instance set a monthly number of 0. Once it's exceeded, it's exceeded.

Taking time to reassess your costs will have a direct impact on your lowest line. However, be just that you don't focus more on cost minimization than opportunity creation. It's easy to cut costs, but downright difficult to originate more income. So be sure that your attentiveness is focused in the right direction.

How To Make A behalf In enterprise

We all going into firm to make money and keep what we make. How do we go from making money to making a profit? How do we stay competitive, growth our cash flow and become better at what we do? Here are some ideas for making a profit in your firm venture.

1) Be great at what you do, by becoming the best in your business

Air Travel Card

As an entrepreneur the more you know the better. What you know can help you make a profit. You have to have book sense, firm sense and common sense working together to make and keep your profits in business. Book sense incorporates knowing all there is to know about what you are selling, whether it is a goods like web site design, food or gifts, or a service like hair styling, investing or lively company. The more you know about the service or goods the more comfortable your investors will feel about giving you money. Your customers will trust and have trust in you and prefer your service over another.

Business sense will keep you in firm and safe you from getting ripped off. It requires you to know the true cost of your supplies, so that you do not pay more than you have to. This is about you knowing where shop, what licenses you need so that you are legal and how to do things the right way. common sense- you may be in situations where you are the youngest someone in the room and may feel intimated, do not let your fear or intimidation stop you. If your common sense is telling you something is not right, it probably is not right and you need to trust what you know and make a decision to wait before making a move.

Business education no longer requires costly, lengthy college courses. Many entrepreneurs who have been thriving in their fields are writing books on how to start similar businesses. They are great sources of information. You can obtain facts and training from a variety of sources such as: experts in the field, competitors, entrepreneurs training centers, seminars, conferences, and books. With the growth in entrepreneurship ventures passage to training is effortlessly ready and affordable

2) Know who your customers are and fight to keep them

Why so many businesses fighting for the concentration and patronage of your customer? Take the time to explore your inherent and current customers. Once you think you have found them, test the shop and see if they buy the product. If they are not buying your goods or making a sale is very difficult you wan to re-evaluate and go back to the drawing board and explore some more. This will help you determine if your target is off or your strategy of reaching them is off. If you want to sell to the affluent your style, appearance, use of language will be much different from selling to middle class families. You must in these cases be able to recap to them and meet their concerns. Can a someone on a shoestring allocation reach the affluent and wealthy? Yes, if they are capable of looking a common ground in which they can use to build a association from and are able to meet the unique needs of that segment of the market. You can sell the same treatment to the wealthy and middle class, but your containers and presentation will be entirely different.

Some businesses think that once they have their customers, the work is done. Not so, this is just the beginning. You will find that some other entrepreneur is coming up right behind and is hungrier than you are, and ready to offer more for less. Your customers are never safe, which means you want to build and keep the relationships current and purposeful. This may mean sending your customers updates about how your firm is doing, new goods or service offerings. If there is nothing new going on in your firm (which should not be) then you can send birthday cards and other items to let the customer know that you are mental of them. Profitable businesses specialize in personalization.

3) Have a constant stream or recipe for recruiting new customers

Have you ever seen a brook or river run dry? It is a sad sight, no longer is that brook good for giving water, oxygen or even a pleasing sight to on lookers. It becomes a hole in the ground collecting dirt and debris. Your firm should never face the same fate, to avoid this you must keep the source full. Your source is the how you get new customers. As entrepreneurs we are so busy maintaining the firm and running straight ahead that we do not focus the priorities. Never take your eyes off where your customers are coming from. raise and maintain your source for recruiting new customers. For example if your source is the relationships with vendors, stores, or magazines then maintain those relationships buy paying on time, responding to emergencies and meeting needs. If your source is referrals, then recompense those who are referring customers to you.

4) conduct your income streams so that they do not run out

Profitable businesses make sure that what they are putting out financially is being replenished by what is being brought in. Keep the rule of earning at least five dollars before you spend one. Two dollars are for paying expenses, one for replenishing supplies, one for advertising and the other for maintaining the payroll or the entrepreneur. There are so many needs for a small firm and new business, from supplies to inventory. The needs seem to outweigh the provisions at times, yet we still need to be able to operate and function without breaking the bank. This is when you want to originate your wish list, and your shopping list. As an entrepreneur we can live in the office provide shop and be roped in by vendors into buying tool that takes classes and any months to master. To get overhead low you must conduct you income streams making a allocation for all your charge and needs. This can be achieved by dividing the money coming into your firm to make it pay for the preset priorities. determine your bills, expenses and firm tool or operations needs. Give a date to buy each items by and do not buy whatever until you have collected the critical money for it. If you are going to lease tool have a stream of income that will preserve this new charge so that your payments are on time and your reputation is being built up. To often home businesses and store fronts are both guilt of spending what they have not made and drying up the income streams. whatever not being replenished at the same rate it is being used is in danger of drying up quickly.

5) payment what the service is worth

It is prominent to the profitability of your firm that you payment what your service or goods is worth. Then it will take a shorter time to see profits. If you undercharge then making a profit takes a lot longer and much more effort. Price right the first time so that you are meeting your expenses and have money for savings or reinvesting. Charging the right price will set your firm in motion and head on the right path.

How To Make A behalf In enterprise

Southwest Airlines Operations - A Strategic Perspective

Background:

Southwest Airlines is the largest airline measured by amount of passengers carried each year within the United States. It is also known as a ‘discount airline’ compared with its large rivals in the industry. Rollin King and Herb Kelleher founded Southwest Airlines on June 18, 1971. Its first flights were from Love Field in Dallas to Houston and San Antonio, short hops with no-frills assistance and a easy fare structure. The airline began with one easy strategy: “If you get your passengers to their destinations when they want to get there, on time, at the lowest potential fares, and make darn sure they have a good time doing it, population will fly your airline.” This advent has been the key to Southwest’s success. Currently, Southwest serves about 60 cities (in 31 states) with 71 million total passengers carried (in 2004) and with a total operating wage of .5 billion. Southwest is traded publicly under the symbol “Luv” on Nyse.

Air Travel Card

Facts:

* The first major airline to fly a particular type of aircraft (Boeing 737s)

* The first major airline to offer ticketless trip principles wide including a frequent flier program based on amount of trips and not amount of miles flown.

* The first airline to offer a profit-sharing program to its Employees (instituted in 1973).

* The first major airline to organize a Web site and offer online booking. In 2001, about 40 percent (.1 billion) of its passenger wage was generated straight through online bookings at [http://www.southwest.com]. Southwest's cost per booking via the Internet is about , compared to a cost per booking straight through trip agents of to .

Key competing advantages:

* Low Operational costs / High Operational Efficiency

* Award winning customer service

* Human reserved supply practices / Work culture

Operations prognosis – competing Dimensions:

Southwest clearly has a definite advantage compared to other airlines in the manufactures by executing an effective and effective operations strategy that forms an important pillar of its overall corporate strategy. Given below are some competing dimensions that will be studied in this paper.

1. Operational Costs and Efficiency

2. Customer Service

3. Employee/Labor Relations

4. Technology

1. Operational Costs and Efficiency

After all, the airline manufactures overall is in shambles. But, how does Southwest Airlines stay profitable? Southwest Airlines has the lowest costs and strongest equilibrium sheet in its industry, agreeing to its chairman Kelleher. The two biggest operating costs for any airline are – labor costs (approx 40%) followed by fuel costs (approx 18%). Some other ways that Southwest is able to keep their operational costs low is - flying point-to-point routes, selecting secondary (smaller) airports, carrying consistent aircrafts, maintaining high aircraft utilization, encouraging e-ticketing etc.

Labor Costs

The labor costs for Southwest typically accounts for about 37% of its operating costs. Perhaps the most primary element of the victorious low-fare airline enterprise model is achieving significantly higher labor productivity. agreeing to a new Hbs Case Study, southwest airlines is the “most heavily unionized” Us airline (about 81% of its employees belong to an union) and its salary rates are thought about to be at or above midpoint compared to the Us airline industry. The low-fare carrier labor advantage is in much more flexible work rules that allow cross-utilization of virtually all employees (except where disallowed by licensing and security standards). Such cross-utilization and a long-standing culture of cooperation among labor groups translate into lower unit labor costs. At Southwest in 4th quarter 2000, total labor expense per available seat mile (Asm) was more than 25% below that of United and American, and 58% less than Us Airways.

Carriers like Southwest have a titanic cost advantage over network airlines simply because their workforce generates more production per employee. In a study in 2001, the productivity of Southwest employees was over 45% higher than at American and United, despite the substantially longer flight lengths and larger midpoint aircraft size of these network carriers. Therefore by its relentless race for lowest labor costs, Southwest is able to easily impact its lowest line revenues.

Fuel Costs

Fuel costs is the second-largest expense for airlines after labor and accounts for about 18 percent of the carrier's operating costs. Airlines that want to prevent huge swings in operating expenses and lowest line profitability select to hedge fuel prices. If airlines can operate the cost of fuel, they can more accurately evaluation budgets and forecast earnings. With growing competition and air trip becoming a commodity business, being competing on price was key to any airline’s survival and success. It became hard to pass higher fuel costs on to passengers by raising marker prices due to the very competing nature of the industry.

Southwest has been able to successfully implement its fuel hedging strategy to save on fuel expenses in a big way and has the largest hedging position among other carriers. In the second quarter of 2005, Southwest’s unit costs fell by 3.5% despite a 25% increase in jet fuel costs. During Fiscal year 2003, Southwest had much lower fuel expense (0.012 per Asm) compared to the other airlines with the exception of JetBlue as illustrated in exhibit 1 below. In 2005, 85 per cent of the airline’s fuel needs has been hedged at per barrel. World oil prices in August 2005 reached per barrel. In the second quarter of 2005 alone, Southwest achieved fuel savings of 6 million. The state of the manufactures also suggests that airlines that are hedged have a competing advantage over the non-hedging airlines. Southwest announced in 2003 that it would add performance-enhancing Blended Winglets to its current and time to come fleet of Boeing 737-700’s. The visually distinctive Winglets will improve carrying out by extending the airplane’s range, recovery fuel, lowering machine maintenance costs, and reducing takeoff noise.

Point-to-Point Service

Southwest operates its flight point-to-point assistance to maximize its operational efficiency and stay cost-effective. Most of its flights are short hauls averaging about 590 miles. It uses the strategy to keep its flights in the air more often and therefore perform better capacity utilization.

Secondary Airports

Southwest flies to secondary/smaller airports in an exertion to reduce trip delays and therefore furnish exquisite assistance to its customers. It has led the manufactures in on-time performance. Southwest has also been able to trim down its airport operations costs relatively better than its rival airlines.

Consistent aircrafts

At the heart of Southwest's success is its particular aircraft strategy: Its fleet consists exclusively of Boeing 737 jets. Having coarse fleet significantly simplifies scheduling, operations and flight maintenance. The training costs for pilots, ground crew and mechanics are lower, because there's only a particular aircraft to learn. Purchasing, provisioning, and other operations are also vastly simplified, thereby lowering costs. Consistent aircrafts also enables Southwest to use its pilot crew more efficiently.

E-Ticketing

The idea of ticketless trip was a major advantage to Southwest because it could lower its distribution costs. Southwest became electronic or ticketless back in the mid-1990s, and today they are about 90-95% ticketless. Customers who use reputation cards are eligible for online transactions, and today Southwest.com bookings account for about 65% of total revenue. The Ceo Gary Kelly thinks that this idea would grow further and that he wouldn't be surprised if e-ticketing accounted for 75% of Southwest’s revenues by end of 2005. In the past, when there was a 10% trip group commission paid, it used to cost about a booking. But currently, Southwest is paying between 50 cents and per booking for electronic transactions that translate to huge cost savings.

2. Employee and Labor Relations

Southwest has been very regarded for its innovative supervision style. It maintains a relentless focus on high-performance relationships and its people-management practices have been the key to its unparalleled success in the airline industry.

Mission Statement

To Our Employees
“We are committed to furnish our Employees a garage work environment with equal occasion for learning and personal growth. Creativity and innovation are encouraged for enhancing the effectiveness of Southwest Airlines. Above all, Employees will be provided the same concern, respect, and caring attitude within the society that they are improbable to share externally with every Southwest Customer.”

The Southwest mission statement shows that the enterprise has a strong commitment to its employees. The enterprise affords the same respect to its employees that is provided to its customers. The Southwest mission statement is unique in that it recognizes the point of its employees within the broader enterprise strategy, which emphasizes superb customer assistance and operational efficiency. The employees reciprocate the respect, loyalty and trust that Southwest demonstrates. Southwest employees are known for their loyalty, dedication, attitude and innovation. The employees are the distinguishing factor between Southwest and the rest of the airline industry.

Hiring

Southwest hiring policy is unique not only within the airline industry, but also more broadly, and revolves around finding population with the right attitude that will thrive in the Southwest culture. overall procedures are employed to hire for definite attitude and dedication. Those who do not posses those qualities are weeded out. Colleen Barrett, a non-operational officer at Southwest, states that

“Hiring is critical, because you cannot institutionalize behavior. Instead, you must recognize those population who already custom the behaviors you are finding for. Then you can allow Employees to be themselves and make decisions about customer assistance based on coarse sense and their natural inclinations.” 1

Recruiting and interviewing at Southwest is a two-step process. The first step is a group interview, conducted by employees, where communication skills of potential candidates are evaluated. The next steps in this process are one on one interview, where the candidates' attitudes and orientation toward serving others are evaluated. These hiring criteria apply to all job functions since all Employees at Southwest play a customer assistance role. A primary part of Southwest operational strategy is that every job at Southwest is a customer assistance position, whether it directly applies to the customer or whether it is internal.

The table below shows that even though Southwest is the most heavily unionized airline, at practically 80%, that contract negotiations between the unions and Southwest are much shorter in period than of the other major carriers. This shows the potential of association that Southwest has with its employees and with the unions that relate them.

Culture

Southwest was created as a distinct kind of enterprise and from its beginnings a unique culture was nurtured. In 1990 Colleen Barrett formed the Southwest Culture Committee. This is unique within the manufactures and among all large companies. The committee also has a mission statement:

“This group's goal is to help originate the Southwest spirit and culture where needed; to enrich it and make it better where it already exists; and to liven it up in places where it might be "floundering". In short, this group's goal is to do "whatever it takes" to create, enhance, and enrich the extra Southwest spirit and culture that has made this such a overwhelming Company/Family.”

It is this unique advent to enterprise values that has created a culture that differentiates itself from others. Southwest’s culture is the reckon why it is successful.

3. customer Service

The Mission of Southwest Airlines
The mission of Southwest Airlines is dedication to the top potential of customer assistance delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, personel pride, and enterprise Spirit.

Approach

Herb Kelleher, founder of Southwest, has been quoted as saying that "We're in the customer assistance business; we just happen to furnish airline transportation".2 Award winning customer assistance is a distinguishing characteristic of Southwest and it is referred to internally as “Positively Outrageous Service”. It means that from the top to lowest everyone does anything he or she can to satisfy the customer. This includes Herb Kelleher, who has been known for helping out baggage handlers on Thanksgiving. It is straight through emphasizing the customer and Employee that Southwest is able to differentiate itself from others in the airline industry. On a more technical level, each Employee or group within Southwest has his or her own customer. This means that every Employee ‘serves’ in one way or someone else despite not being directly complicated with the passenger. The mechanic’s customer is the pilot and the caterer’s is the flight attendant.

Results

It can be said that the "Positively Outrageous Service" that is unique to Southwest “is not the succeed of a department, or a program, or a mandate from management. It is not secondary to the product; it is the product.” This advent creates the conditions where Employees are more likely to treat customers in ways that distinguish the enterprise from others. There are numerous accounts of passengers who have received exceptional rehabilitation from Southwest employees.

The interrogate that needs to be answered is how Southwest’s customer assistance is distinct and why? Is it coarse for customers of other airlines to rave about their extra service? The riposte is that it is not. While Southwest does not have a monopoly on population who are kind and who are willing to go above and beyond to satisfy a customer, such behavior is nurtured at Southwest to a much greater extent.

It can then be accomplished that the customer assistance that is potential to Southwest is a part of its culture. This culture is supported straight through Employee encouragement to do the extra to satisfy the customer. This advent inspires population who would commonly only on occasion go out of their way to help someone, to come to be consistent performers that offer exceptional assistance all the time. Southwest employees are what differentiate its customer assistance from the other airlines.

4. Technology

Southwest utilizes technology in many ways to fulfill its enterprise objectives and claim its effective operations. agreeing to its Ceo, technology equals productivity. Launched in 1996, ticketless trip was first introduced by Southwest. On May 1st 2000, Southwest Airlines introduces "Swabiz," a portal that assists enterprise trip managers in booking and tracking trips made straight through its web site [http://www.southwest.com]. There are many new technology initiatives being undertaken currently and some are in the pipeline.

Bar codes in Boarding Passes

Southwest Airlines has invested million During the past three years to standardize corporate and terminal operations on about 10,000 Dell OptiPlex desktop and Latitude notebook computers agreeing to its enterprise executives. Southwest wanted to replace its well known, brightly colored plastic boarding passes with an electronic principles with bar-code paper boarding passes. So it installed about 350 touch screen marker readers powered by Dell OptiPlex desktops. The bar code gives Southwest more data to automatically reconcile the amount of boarding passes with the amount of passengers that easily board the plane.

Although the technology will help Southwest Airlines remain effective by consolidating passenger data for the company's 3,000 daily flights, there were concerns it could lengthen the time to get travelers on board. Any way it was found that scanning each bar code on the boarding passes didn't increase or shorten boarding schedules, but it did take minutes from menagerial processes, such as finding up customer records. The new paper bar code principles is giving Southwest marker agents the potential to match a customer narrative within having to scroll straight through and log into manifold software screens. The process is much more automated. Once the bar code on the boarding pass is scanned at the terminal gate it checks off the person from the passenger list in real time.

The old process was by hand that complicated finding the information, scrolling straight through several software screens from reservations to check-in to boarding. The bar code hardware to scan the boarding passes has been deployed. The enterprise is in the process of replacing customer assistance back-office equipment at airports including at its headquarters in Dallas.

Software Upgrades

Software applications, such as those used by clerks to check in passengers, are being replaced. Southwest Airlines' internally written "Airport Application Suite" is improbable to rollout next year as the enterprise transitions from green screens to Window-based user interface. Similar to Wal-Mart stores Inc., Southwest Airlines believes in developing in-house the software that runs its operations. The enterprise uses very diminutive off-the-shelf software. There are between 75 and 100 projects in the works each year supported by practically 900 It employees.

Rfid

Radio frequency identification technology, a convenient alternative to bar-coding for luggage identification, is also on Southwest's radar. It plans to test Rfid technology sometime in 2006. Even though, Southwest is playing a diminutive catch-up with other airlines such as Air Tran, Alaska and Champion Airlines, in many cases they are able leapfrog to more sophisticated applications easily having waited longer.

Challenges:

Southwest has emerged very successful, despite the most troubled times in the airline market. However, it faces new challenges in the face of expanding competition from other low fare airlines such as JetBlue, Ata airlines, America West.

Reserved Seating

Due to expanding security guidelines since September 2001, Southwest would need to get ready for assigned (reserved) seating to track its in-flight passengers. This convert will involve large technology investments and may impact its gate operations negatively since the current way of unassigned seating has helped in quick gate turnarounds.

Passenger Demand

The keep-it-simple religious doctrine has served Southwest well. But as its own enterprise grows and grows more complex, with plans to purchase dozens of new aircraft and an improbable upsurge in passenger traffic to about 80 million boarding’s a year, the simplicity strategy that has been reflected in the airline's It religious doctrine is evolving. The Cio Tom Nealon says that "It's time to adapt our enterprise processes for efficiency. As our airline scales for us to furnish the same kind of high-touch customer service, we have to automate a lot of things we've been able to do without technology previously. The challenge is doing that without conceding the customer touch." Southwest is also aggressively pursuing customer association supervision (Crm) techniques and has applications to get comprehension into customer’s wants and dislikes. agreeing to an interview with its Ceo Gary Keller, Southwest has its focus on enhancing in two areas - customer’s airport palpate and in-flight experience.

In-Flight Entertainment

In an overall exertion to improve customer’s in-flight experience, in-flight entertainment is something that Southwest is currently evaluating and which JetBlue has been very victorious at already because of its introduction in its long-haul flights. In comparison, Southwest has 415 airplanes to reconsider and that represents an venture decision at a whole new dimension. Additionally, Southwest has to reconsider how things may fit into their environment. At this point, 60% of its assistance is still very short haul. Southwest needs to be mindful of the fact that a definite advent that has been victorious for its competitor may not be necessarily work to its advantage.

Summary:

Southwest has long been regarded as a benchmark in its manufactures for operational excellence. Southwest Airlines is a fine example of a enterprise that is committed to its core competencies - effective operations to drive its low cost structure, outstanding delivery of customer assistance and innovative Hr supervision practices. We hope this paper provided a good comprehension into Southwest operations, as part of its overall strategy, to perform success and gain competing advantage.

You Can Be a Cruise Ship Owner Even If You Are Not Rich

Unlike fractional ownership of aircraft and houseboats, fractional owners of a cruise ship can all use the ship simultaneously. There is plentifulness of room for you and the other owners to live on the ship any time you want, or all the time. You can use it as a full-time residence, and so can the other co-owners.

The first positive benefit of shared ownership is acquisition cost. There are many cruise ships on the store in all price ranges, sizes, ages, and conditions. There are many smaller and older cruise ships available for less than one million dollars. At the lower end, some smaller cruise ships in fair health can be acquired for about 0,000. At the highest end, the biggest new mega cruise ships now cost about 0 million to build.

Air Travel Card

Do the math. If one hundred buyers pool resources in exchange for a division of ship ownership, the acquisition cost will be divided by that same number. One percent ownership of a 0,000 cruise ship would cost a mere 00 for ship acquisition. At the other end of the scale, one percent ownership of a brand new mega cruise ship would cost five million dollars.

There are some other figures that must be tabulated into the total cost of ownership. Acquisition cost is first and foremost. The next outline is the cost to put the ship in service. On an older ship this cost may be higher than the acquisition cost. On the other hand, the cost to put a ship into assistance can be much lower if you were to get a good deal on a ship that already meets the international standards for ship safety, especially Solas (Safety of Life at Sea). Maintaining compliancy with part Ii Solas 74 amendments is cost prohibitive for some older ships and they are typically scrapped instead of being refurbished at great expense. There is a very important Solas implementation date advent up on January 10, 2010. On that date all commercial international ships will be required to be in compliancy with the new fire protection codes. The most important new codes deal with the use of combustible materials in the ship. It will be expensive to replace all combustible materials in ships with non-combustible or flame resistant Solas compliant materials that meet the new protection standards. This will ensue in many ships being sold for scrap metal.

The looming Solas 2010 implementation date offers both perils and opportunities. The biggest peril is the possibility that the price to bring a ship into full compliancy with international standards will be greater than the value of the ship. However, there is a silver lining in this cloud. This pending Solas implementation date has already started to show up as a original factor in the asking and selling prices of ships on the store today.

Solas 2010 also offers a grand chance for those who may prefer to have a very large houseboat instead of a commercial ship. Ships that are not in compliancy with Solas 2010 are now selling for a song (inexpensively). A cruise ship can undoubtedly be converted into a megayacht with the stroke of a pen. privately owned yachts, not in commercial service, and not carrying passengers or cargo for hire are exempt from many of the Solas requirements. Operating costs are also lower for a underground yacht. It cost less to register, flag, and insure a underground yacht. Megayachts can be flagged and classified for unlimited service. That means that a megayacht can go approximately in any place you want it to go. There is one major drawback to registering a cruise ship as a underground yacht. You cannot use the yacht commercially. This cuts off a inherent revenue source.

There are many decent cruise ships for sale at prices of less than one million dollars that would make good underground megayachts. For example, take the 'Vergina Sky' is a ship that I have personally inspected and so I can talk first hand about it. The asking price was 0,000. Here are the specifics of the ship in a nutshell:

My Comments after inspecting the ship

This is a well built puny 'Pocket Cruiser.' At just over 320' in length overall, it is a small cruise ship. Many experienced cruise passengers prefer smaller more intimate cruise ships for a range of reasons. This ship can go places where the big cruise ships cannot reach, such as shallow draft ports and even many rivers. It has an omni-directional bow thruster and can turn on a dime (relatively speaking of course). I have determined examined this ship from the machine log to the ultrasound hull report. This is a sound and safe puny cruise ship. It is also a very fuel effective and prudent ship. My first time on this ship was in the middle of the summer in Greece when it was very hot outside. The ship is fully air conditioned and it was cool and comfortable inside the ship. I checked the machine room to see how many generators were running. I am happy to narrative that all the electric and air-conditioning requirements can be met by running just one of the three Daihatsu generators. These generators are very prudent to operate in terms of fuel consumption and maintenance.

I was able to negotiate with the owner, John Kosmas and get some concessions. I got the price down to 0,000. And at that price, he agreed to bring the ship into compliancy with Solas 2005 and also to contain new paint topside. The ship was fairly well furnished even including bed linen, but the ship had been laid up for years. Its most up-to-date assistance was in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Cruise ships that trade exclusively in the Mediterranean and Black Seas tend to have smaller cabins and fewer amenities than the typical cruise ships that frequent the Caribbean. The bottom line is that this ship was an cheaper model, not a luxury model. When I was inspecting the machine room, I asked for the machine log. When I opened it I noticed all the entries were in Greek. I was able to espy some dates and other data that told me when the ship was last in service, but I could not read the Greek entries so I handed the machine log back to the ship owner, and told him "It's all Greek to me." Being Greek, Mr. Kosmas failed to find the humor in that.

Let's look at the numbers on this ship. 100% of the acquisition cost would have been 0,000. 1% thus = 00. One hundred buyers could own one percent each. There are 120 cabins so each co-owner could have a underground cabin with 20 cabins left over. However, these cabins are a bit on the small side. Every cabin does have a bath and shower, but the size is just too small to be comfortable for most people, especially if the owners intend to live onboard full time. On a ship this size I would propose that there be no more than 60 joint owners so each can have two cabins and will have the choice of converting those two cabins into a two room suite. To keep the numbers easy lets say that this ship has 50 buyers who each buy 2% of the ship. Buy in cost per owner would then be ,000. If there were only ten buyers, then the acquisition cost per buyer would be ,000. ,000 will not buy much of a house on land, but on this ship it would buy 10% of a ship like the Vergina Sky and twelve cabins that could be converted into a fairly large home.

At the cheaper end of the scale, a co owner could buy 1% of an prudent cruise ship for about 00. any way it is not indispensable for all co owners to have equal shares in the ship. ownership can undoubtedly be divided up into 1% increments. If one buyer wanted 5%, then his cost of acquisition would be ,000. He would be entitled to 5% of the ship's cabins, and would have five votes on operations and administration of the ship, such as itinerary planning.

Before becoming a joint owner, it would be imperative to find other people who have similar goals. I would propose composing a first Dccr (Declaration Of
Covenants, Conditions And Restrictions). You can do this before you even shop for a ship. Write your version of how you envision the shared ownership of a cruise ship as it should be. Then see if you can find some people who agree with your goals and your Dccr, subject to some revisions and concessions to adapt other joint owners.

Step One: Determine if you and your family have the desire and financial ability to come to be joint cruise ship (or megayacht) owners.

Step Two: Find others who agree with your understanding for shared ownership of a ship.

Step Three: Shop for a ship. This is the fun part.

Step Four: Buy a ship.

Step Five: Put the ship into service.

Even if you are not rich, you can afford to jointly own a cruise ship. But then comes the next logical question: Why would you or anything want to live on a cruise ship? Who would this be suitable for?

If you are retired or otherwise have a stable revenue from a reliable source you probably can afford to be a cruise ship co-owner and live full-time onboard a cruise ship. If you work in a field where you can work from home online, then you too can probably afford to come to be a co-owner of a cruise ship. Most contemporary ships have satellite Internet assistance available 24-7.

Operating a cruise ship is expensive. The expenses contain the cost of fuel, labor, maintenance, repairs, spares, food, port charges, insurance, technical management, shore management, registration, and the other costs of operating the ship. At first espy these costs may seem expensive, but in reality the cost of living at sea is undoubtedly a business agreement inspecting what you get based upon what you pay. The best value does not all the time translate to the cheapest price. If the ship is well managed, the administration will seek the highest ability goods, services, and labor at the very best global value. If the owners are dissatisfied with whether technical or shore management, they replace them.

If there are many other co-owners of the ship to split the operating expenses of the ship, it can be affordable for those with a moderate level of income, such as a seclusion check. I do have exact operating cost figures but I won't bore you with that data. The bottom line is that it would not be prohibitively expensive for a middle-class median someone to be able to afford to own a fraction of a cruise ship and be able to afford to live on the cruise ship full-time if they elect to do so.

For comparison purposes it is distinguished that you have expenses in land based housing too. Those expenses contain property taxes, homeowners insurance, maintenance and repairs, yard care, and utilities. Additionally you have transportation costs and of course food costs. Most people also spend money on entertainment too. When these expenses are added up the maintenance fees for living aboard a ship are comparable.

There are undoubtedly some savings resulting from living aboard a ship. The ship's administrative chef buys food and kitchen supplies in bulk for the ship and can get better prices than the median shopper. Other savings ensue from the large freezers and the mobility of the ship giving the food assistance administration the ability to stock up on supplies in countries where prices are low. Some crew and owners may choose to fish for leisure. This can furnish some fresh food at even lower costs to the owners. Labor savings are realized when the crew is hired based upon the best global labor rates. The laws of furnish and query drive prices down in some places in the world. allowable ship administration can capitalize on these disparities. All the savings would be passed on to the cabin owners resulting in an prudent cost of living similar to what you could expect to spend with a accepted home. Ship administration should have accounting transparency will all books (financial records) open and available for any owner to inspect. Also ship administration should submit all financial records quarterly to an surface auditor for the peace of mind of the owners. any person in the chain who spends any of the ship's operational funds should also be periodically audited. For example, a good way to audit the administrative chef would be for one or more of the live-aboard co-owners of the ship to go to the food store district of each port of call and they should try to haggle and get a better price for the same food than the price the administrative chef was able to acquire. If the administrative chef cannot find better deals than the ship's co-owners, then the administrative chef should be given his walking papers. The administrative chef position is a vital position on a cruise ship. This is a position of trust because he will bill the food he buys to the ship. He must never be tempted to accept bribes from vendors or suppliers. Therefore, he should know that he will be routinely audited and any substandard doing will ensue in termination of his employment.

The biggest value of all onboard cruise ship is in labor costs. The better cruise ships tend to be labor intensive, providing passengers with unrelenting concentration and extravagant pampering. The hotel staff on all cruise ships provides the basic services including food establishment and serving, laundry, cabin stewarding, entertainment, casino operation, attractiveness shop operations, This is one area where I would prefer to not scrimp because of the very good value in these services due to the low cost of international labor. I would prefer to go beyond the level that most cruise ships go in the area of spas. Land based luxury and specialty resort spas are very expensive, but the exact same level of service, professionalism, skill, and treatments can be in case, granted on a cruise ship at highly low cost. Labor is the key and the original imagine for most of the price of spas. Labor is a grand value on a cruise ship because the cruise ship managers can choose workers from the global marketplace where it is easy to get the best value for the money.

Spas

Spa medicine is customized for each client. Spas generally offer services such as:

Soothing massage therapies, skin and body treatments drawing from European and Eastern principles, master hair and nail services, and a full menu of therapeutic treatments utilizing a deep-cleansing facial at the start of the program, as well as a series of detoxification and contouring wraps, lypo-reduction wrap, as well as nautical mud and herb wraps. Massage Therapies including: Swedish Massage, Shiatsu Massage, Deep Tissue Treatment, Maternity Massage, Therapeutic Foot Massage (Reflexology), French Hydrotherapy Massage.

The curative therapies contain a range of massages, reflexology, facials, firming and many other body treatments. Plus a wide range of services and wellness programs specially designed to meet the individual's needs and desires. A full assistance salon offers all manner of hair treatments (including a certified colorist), as well as a range of manicures, pedicures, and 'facelifts' for your hands. Broad skin care includes: Age administration Therapies including, Glycolic Facial, Anti-Aging Facial Peel, Microdermabrasion; Facials including: Aromaplasty Facial, Teen Facial, Gentleman's Facial, Nutrisource Facial, Regulating Acne Facial, Vitamin "C" Skin reparation Facial; Body Treatments including: Decleor Sauna Mask, French Hydrotherapy Massage, Andromeda Salt Glow, Mummy Mud Mask, Seaweed Body Wrap, Safe Sun Treatment, Herbal Wrap; as well as various hair and nail treatments.

Additionally, spas also can facilitate weight allowance programs, and even administer corporeal therapy. In short, you can be treated like a king, on the budget of a pauper.

Labor Costs - International competition provides the most value to the ship owners.

On paper it seems to make good sense to man the ship with a Philippine crew. I love the Philippines. I have been there several times. English is still widely spoken and ordinarily spoken quite well. The people are ordinarily friendly and happy to see foreign tourists. A large division of ships worldwide are manned by crews from the Philippines. The Philippine government has a pretty good buildings and principles to facilitate the export of Philippine labor. In spite of how fascinating it seems on paper, I would propose Not hiring a crew from the Philippines. Philippine workers tend to be envious of others, and especially of every person else's wages. They tend to think they are getting the raw end of the deal. It is rare to find a Filipino who is happy with his employment. While I am sure there are many good employees from the Philippines, there are more who are dissatisfied than satisfied with their employment. There seems to be a cultural anomaly in the Philippines where people feel that employers are bad guys. I would hesitate to propose a crew from the Philippines in spite of the apparent advantages on paper.

My advice (for what it is worth)

I do know something about what I am writing about here. I am the former President of Adventure Spa Cruise. My guidance is not just uninformed ranting. Back to the point now, the second best manning nation for a ship is India. I highly propose India for the curative staff and the entire hotel staff, including the spa, and every other position except the deck and engineering. The labor costs in India are very attractive. I would also propose using an Indian based manning agency. It is best if the ship's owners do not have to deal with every worker issue or concern. The manning department takes the pressure off the ship's management, and their assistance is very reasonable. Indian employees tend to make better employees than do Filipinos. Indians also speak English, albeit not quite as well as Filipinos. I know Americans tend to get all worked up when someone uses a broad brush to paint an entire ethnicity. I love the people from the Philippines, but as employees they tend to be more problematic than do Indian employees. I perceive that this statement is politically incorrect, and these days that might get me thrown in jail. I ordinarily do not worry so much about being politically correct. I call it the way I see I and I let the cards fall where they may, and hope I can stay out of jail for speaking my mind.

All deck and engineering positions should be filled with an all Ukrainian crew. The ship will perceive the most value for the money with Ukrainian deck and engineering staff. The Ukraine has a long nautical history and tradition. nautical training and standards in the Ukraine are among the best in the world. Ukrainian deck and engineering staff are as good as or better than any other, but the cost of their labor is a very good value. The labor for deck officer and engineering staff are governed by international agreements, including Stcw (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers).

Putting a cruise ship into service

After acquiring the ship, it will wish some more speculation to put it into service. At this point the joint owners will need to reach some agreements on many points. The cost of putting a cruise ship into assistance as a megayacht (very large underground yacht) is much less than putting the ship into commercial service. However, if you can afford to buy a ship can undoubtedly meet Solas 2010 requirements, and can afford to flag and register it as a commercial ship then you can use the ship commercially to produce revenue and Roi (return on investment).

There are many marketing options for a commercial cruise ship. If the owners use no more than half the cabins, then that will leave adequate means to produce adequate revenue to at least pay for operating costs, and possibly produce a profit above operating costs. I will just briefly touch on some of the options available for marketing cruise ship capacity.

1. Conventional cruises. There is a trade-off here. You can produce revenue by providing accepted cruises. This will wish that the ship have an itinerary that suits the commercial cruising market.

2. Freight and cargo. Some cruise ships have adequate cargo capacity to produce some revenue by booking freight.

3. Assisted living. A cruise ship is well distinguished for assisted living, including crew and facilities. The going rate for assisted living in the median city in America is higher than the median cost of a cruise of the same duration.

4. Timeshares. This is an choice not available to accepted cruise ship operators but could be facilitated if your co-owners agree to this type of marketing to fill cabins not used by co-owners. I will not go into the figures here, but timeshares tend to be high profit sales. There is a good chance that if the joint owners use no more than half the ship's cabins for their own personal use, the remaining cabins could undoubtedly produce more than the total number all the joint owners combined have invested.

Ships that would undoubtedly meet Solas 2010 tend to cost a bit more money to buy up front, and cost more to put into service. So I will give you consolidate of examples.

My personal estimation of the Orient Venus

It is a late model and gorgeous ship. It has many highly desirable attributes for a residential ship. It is a high end luxury cruise ship with an extraordinarily high tonnage to passenger ratio. This is very important for a residential ship. More living room and more space per passenger is far more indispensable for a residential ship than for a accepted cruise ship. When passengers are only on a ship for a short time, they can tolerate cramped living quarters, but when they live year-round on a ship, the extra space is quite valuable. The owners have been trying to sell this ship for ,000,000. That may seem like a high price, but when you divide it by the number of cabins (195) the asking price per cabin is 2,564. This price is in line with what you would expect to pay for a condominium. The last word I got from the owners is that they will sell the ship for ,000,000 now (,307 per cabin). The cabins are all "outside" cabins and are large. The ship can adapt 606 passengers and a crew of 120, for a total of 726 people.

Several ship brokers have this ship listed. I ordinarily do not talk to ship brokers. I prefer to talk directly with the ship owners. I am in caress with the owners of the Orient Venus. I could probably get this stunningly gorgeous ship for less than ,000,000 today, and get some concessions and extras thrown in to boot.

Another example of a high end ship that would make do well as a commercial cruise ship, plus adapt a hundred or so full-time live aboard co-owners is the Dream Princess, originally named Song of Norway.

The asking price on this ship is million Usd. Divide the asking price by the number of cabins and the median cost per cabin would be ,620. Of course some cabins are better than others so co-owners would have to agree of the shared usage before agreeing to the purchase.

I have some bad news for the ship owners and some good news for you. This ship will not sell for the asking price.

Fuel

Ship fuel is cheaper than automobile fuel for a few reasons. There are no road taxes on ship fuel of course and also it is dissimilar fuel. Ships main engines ordinarily run on Ifo180 or Ifo380. Generator engines tend to be more finicky and generally wish diesel (Mdo), which is still cheaper than automotive diesel. Ifo 180 and 380 costs much less than Mdo, ordinarily about half the price. Ships consume a lot of fuel. So fuel cost is a major concern. I have some suggestions. If I were a co-owner of a ship I would be willing to invest a puny more in the ship to increase fuel efficiency, and thus lower operating costs. There are many things that can be done to increase fuel efficiency. I would start with hull resistance. There is a new silicone-based paint from International Paints that when applied to the hull reduces number of resistance in the water sufficiently to ensue in a 3 to 5% decrease in fuel consumption. A similar coating for the propellers also has been proven to increase fuel efficiency.
In increasing to hull and prop coatings, there is an even more promising way to accomplish dramatic fuel savings.

There is a firm called Kiteship that has advanced and produces kites for racing sailboats. These navigation kites do not wish a mast. The kites fly high above the vessel, attached by cable and controlled from the vessel. Dave Culp of Kiteship has done a technical feasibility study on fitting a very large kite onto a accepted cruise ship. This would dramatically sacrifice fuel consumption. It would turn a fuel guzzler to a "green machine." This is tantamount to converting a powerboat into a sail boat. The develop of a cruise ship limits the number of sail that a accepted ship can safely accommodate. A cruise ship lacks the ballast of a sail boat. If used in increasing to the main engine(s) the kite will increase fuel efficiency. If the kite is used to pull the ship with the main engines shut down the ship's speed will be reduced substantially. However, in this case, not only would the ship save Ifo (main machine fuel) but also save Mdo (generator machine fuel). If the kite were pulling the ship unassisted by the ship's engines, then the propellers could be used to weighty the ship's generators without firing up the diesel generator engines. Even if the ship were traveling very slowly in the water, the propellers would turn in reverse if freed from the main engines. This is a very easy and easy task for the ship's engineer to accomplish. In other words, the ship can be pulled by the kite, and that appeal will push the ship's propellers providing power to produce electricity and power the air-conditioning without using any fuel. The trade-off is a loss of speed and also some tacking is required, added reducing actual speed. What's the rush? Why not go for maximum fuel savings? The salient point is that a high flying large kite can pull a cruise ship. If I were a co-owner of a cruise ship I would hope to find like minded co-owners who would be receptive to using such state-of-the-art technologies to save fuel.

There are hundreds of cruise ships on the store but I will just mention one more here. This cruise ship has Ro/Ro (Roll-On, Roll-Off) capability. This would be very suitable for live aboard owners who want to bring their "toys" with them. The stable deck will adapt 6 to 8 trucks, or 60 to 80 cars. That converts to a lot of co-owner toys such as motorhomes, tour trailers, campers, cabin cruisers, ski boats, jet skis, sailboats, houseboats, bass boats, motorcycles, Atvs, cars, and trucks.

Conclusion

Becoming a co-owner of a cruise ship is not a far fetched idea. It is practical and feasible if you are able to find like minded people who would be willing to share the expenses.

Current Name: Vergina Sky

Ship Details: Built: 1971 in Japan - totally rebuilt 1992 in Greece

My Comments after inspecting the ship

This is a well built puny 'Pocket Cruiser.' At just over 320' in length overall, it is a small cruise ship. Being Greek, Mr.

How to Fix the Air Conditioning in a Car

Air conditioner in car has come to be a necessity these days. It is very difficult to tour in a car without an Ac in scorching heat. The car Ac is very small and the designing and the functioning is fully dissimilar from that of the air conditioners used in offices and homes. There are two sides of an air conditioning system of a car, viz high side and low side. The compressor of the Ac begins at the high side, and performs the functioning of the pump. The refrigerant is moved through the system with the help of the compressor. The expansion valve is there at the low side, which restricts the flow of refrigerant. This helps in reducing the temperature and the pressure of the refrigerant.

The car air conditioner works practically like a refrigerator and has a multi-component piece of machinery. The warm air is removed from the car and the cool air is pushed inside the car. This helps in maintaining the temperature of the small space in the car, and moderates the area.

Air Travel Card

There may be times when the Ac in the car stops working or does not give productive cooling. A fix is required at this stage. Each and every car is made of dissimilar manufacture and model. But, the basic functioning of the Ac in most of the cars is the same. The basic problems with the car air conditioner and the basic ways to fix the problems of car air conditioner have been listed below:

Absence of cool air and improper cooling are the signs of problems with respect to the car air conditioner.

In order to diagnose the problem with your car air conditioner, it is very important to have allowable facts and knowledge of the dissimilar parts of the car air conditioner. There are five components of the car Ac viz the compressor, the condenser, the expansion valve, the refrigerant, and the dryer or evaporator.

It is very important to understand the functioning of all the parts so that the right activity can be taken in case of any problem.

The refrigerant is pumped out through the compressor. The compressor acts as a power unit of the car air conditioner.

The condenser performs the function of changing the refrigerant to the liquid form.

The liquid formed through the condenser is converted into cold air with the help of the evaporator or the dryer.

There may be some pressure on the condensed refrigerant. This pressure is removed with the help of the expansion valve and moved into the evaporator.

In case of ineffective cooling, check the refrigerant for any kind of leakage. A fluorescent dye that is facilely available at any auto part shop can be used to check the refrigerant. Autozone or Napa can be used as the fluorescent dye.

The instructions given on the pack of the dye that you buy should be followed fully and carefully. In most of the cases, the dye is added through the low pressure A/C recharge port that is found on the canister of the air conditioner of the car.

Use the U/V light to check for the leakage. In case of leakage of the refrigerant, the refilled kits can be bought from any auto furnish store. These refilled kits are sealed and the replacement can be done by anything at home.

In case this is not the problem, check for any kind of problem with the fuses, wires, and fan belts. The fuse may have turned bad. The wires might have broken, and the belts of the fan may have got damaged. All these problems may be creating issue with the functioning of the pump. In case of any problem with any of these parts, get the parts supplanted to ensure allowable functioning of the car air conditioner.

The air conditioner should be tested after making any kind of fix done by you.

In case one has tried all the above methods to make the Ac function properly, and even after replacing all the parts, the Ac does not function properly, then there is a need to call a professional.
